Saskatchewan residents will have two opportunities to catch the annual Taurid meteor showers this November, with the Southern and Northern branches reaching their peaks on separate dates.
The showers are known for producing occasional bright fireballs, making them an interesting target for observers willing to spend some time beneath the night sky.
The Taurids are divided into the Southern Taurids and Northern Taurids.
Both are associated with the Taurid meteor complex, which is linked to debris from Comet 2P/Encke.
As Earth travels through the debris stream, small particles enter the atmosphere and burn up, creating the streaks of light commonly called shooting stars.
The Southern Taurids are expected to peak overnight from Nov. 4 to 5, while the Northern Taurids reach their peak around Nov. 11 to 12.
Although the showers have separate peak dates, their periods of activity overlap.
