According to Fortune, the White House held a closed-door meeting on Tuesday with AI giants such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic to discuss a voluntary framework for testing cybersecurity risks of advanced AI models. However, the government only announced that the framework had been completed, without disclosing its specifics, reviewers, or implementation timeline. In response, five Democratic senators, led by Kirsten Gillibrand, jointly sent a letter criticizing the Trump administration’s “disorganized and ad hoc” approach to AI regulation, warning that inconsistent policies could drive companies toward Chinese AI alternatives and threaten U.S. economic security and competitiveness. Sam Bresnick, a researcher at Georgetown University, noted that the core appeal of Chinese AI lies in its low cost and high adaptability, not regulatory uncertainty—companies like DoorDash have already entrusted sensitive tasks to U.S. models while outsourcing routine analysis to Chinese open-source models. Bresnick also warned that reliance on Chinese AI carries its own risks—Beijing could at any moment cut off foreign users’ access to advanced models, leaving companies trapped on both sides.
